Speech summary:
Lafcadio Hearn (1850 - 1904), known also by his Japanese name Koizumi Yakumo, was a journalist and international writer known best for his books about Japanese culture, legends and folk tales, especially his retelling of Japanese ghost stories. His 14 books about pre-modern Japan are very much part of Japanese culture, because they had not been recorded in English or Japanese before his books were published.
Since receiving a one year teacher-scholar grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities in 1990, Naomi Westcott has traveled to Hearn related places in Greece, Ireland, US, and Japan, following his footsteps and getting to know his family and scholars. She will talk about the life and work of Lafcadio Hearn, places that inspired his writings, the interest and revival of his work, and museums and libraries dedicated to Lafcadio Hearn.
Free conversation and tea time will follow with Japanese snacks. Please join us!
