This year’s annual Japanese Cultural Bazaar will be held on Saturday, October 26th at UCCS. We are now accepting applications for vendors, performers, volunteers, and this year, workshop facilitators! So if you are interested in participating in any of those categories, please fill out the form here.

Member Profile: Kayoko Jennings

Kayoko joined JASSC in 2002.

We asked her to tell us why she joined JASSC:

When my husband and I took our children to the Children’s Day Festival at Colorado College in 2002, I was delighted to see many traditional Japanese cultures introduced to the public. Soon after, I joined the group to help share some other types of crafts or toys with local children. Since I joined, I made a lot of friends, maybe more than I made in Japan, and I didn’t feel homesick in Colorado Springs. My two boys who enjoyed craft activities and kite flying at the festival are now 29 & 25 years old. They also learned a lot about Japan through JASSC. My husband and I appreciated JASSC for keeping our children in touch with Japanese culture in Colorado.

How have you contributed to JASSC as well as in the community?

Besides Children’s Day, I helped Mochitsuki, Cultural festival & bazaar, Monthly cultural meeting, and some cooking classes with other members and helpful volunteers. I have been teaching Japanese to the members and local people for about 21 years. When I engaged with my husband a long time ago, I took classes in Tokyo to become a Japanese teacher in case I wanted to do it in the future, and I am so happy that now I can use what I’ve learned.

Anything else?

We appreciate JASSC for giving our family an opportunity to meet and engage with the Japanese community and with our American friends who also love Japanese culture.
